Leading cryptocurrency, banking and fintech companies have eliminated SIM swap and number port-out account takeover attacks using Payfone’s patented digital identity technology
NEW YORK (August 27, 2018) – SIM swap attacks have been making headlines as one of the fastest-growing and most devastating fraud vectors plaguing companies and consumers today, with the number of victims increasing more than 250% between 2013 and 2016, according to the U.S. Fair Trade Commission. As reported by WIRED, CNBC and Motherboard, hackers have been using the scam, and a variation known as number port-out or porting fraud, to drain millions of dollars from consumers’ online accounts. But consumers are not the only victims of these attacks. Service providers such as banks, cryptocurrency exchanges, healthcare companies and social media networks who fail to protect their users against SIM swap and porting fraud have also been making the news. In addition to major reputational damage, companies risk losing users to more secure competitors, and may find themselves liable for billions in lost funds.

WHAT COMPANIES CAN DO TO PROTECT THEMSELVES AND CUSTOMERS

Payfone, the world’s leading digital identity authentication company, announced today that it has won a definitive patent for its anti-SIM swap and porting attack technology. Called the Trust Score, the technology is already helping proactive service providers to protect their customers by detecting SIM swap and porting signals before hackers can take over accounts, and alerting companies of abnormal activity. Clients who use Payfone’s patented technology have reported an elimination or dramatic reduction in SIM swap and porting account takeover attacks since implementation. In the case of one cryptocurrency client, this technology has saved the company and its customers millions in cryptocoins by thwarting attempted SIM swap hacking attacks.

“SIM swap and porting attacks are now a national epidemic, and Payfone has the power to stop this,” said Rodger Desai, Chief Executive Officer of Payfone. “We have the definitive set of patents and solutions to solve this growing threat. We urge service providers to take action by using our technology to thwart these types of attacks before they can do harm to their customers and to their reputations.”

Payfone’s Trust Score gives companies real-time insights, at the time of a transaction, by combining a check of whether a SIM swap has taken place with advanced behavioral analytics. Payfone is able to provide these services without storing or passing personally identifiable information in production environments to service providers who obtain consent to use the Trust Score.

The Trust Score has an additional benefit of creating a more seamless experience for legitimate users. One of the main complaints that consumers have about accessing online services is that proving their identities through passwords, knowledge-based authentication, and SMS one-time passcodes is cumbersome and time-consuming. Payfone overcomes this tradeoff by using advanced analytics to make logging into online accounts easy for good users and impossible for scammers.

“Consumers expect digital services to be effortless and secure. Yet security can often be cumbersome,” said David Birch, Global Ambassador, Consult Hyperion. “With new, cutting-edge attacks such as SIM swaps, businesses need more and better security, which could mean more friction and therefore fewer customers. Payfone’s technologies deliver the security without the friction.”

Mobile ID service will help consumers and businesses eliminate passwords, simplify login, and enhance online security and privacy

NEW YORK/TORONTO (June 18, 2018) – Payfone, the world’s leading digital identity authentication company, and EnStream, a joint venture of Canada’s leading national mobile telecom companies, today announced they are extending their partnership to create a next-generation, mobile-based federated authentication service that increases convenience for consumers without sacrificing security and privacy.

“Consumers have too many passwords, or re-use the ones they have too many times, increasing the risk of identity theft and account takeovers by hackers, said Rodger Desai, CEO of Payfone. “Two- factor authentication helps, but it’s clumsy and complicated, and doesn’t really deal with the underlying problem—passwords. Wouldn’t it be great if online identity worked like credit cards—ultra-convenient and trusted by everyone, everywhere?”

The new service, to be available initially in Canada, will allow consumers to log into accounts or verify transactions with any participating online service using a single mobile app on their phone. Backed by participating mobile network operators, the service will bring together EnStream’s consumer-friendly Mobile Connect solution with Payfone’s Trust Score identity and fraud analytics solution, which is currently used by Fortune 100 banks, retailers, health insurance companies, and others.

How Payfone and Enstream’s Mobile ID service will benefit consumers and enterprises:

  • Convenience: Replaces passwords and clumsy two-factor authentication methods.
  • Security: Unlike other “over-the-top” services, online connections will be automatically secured if a phone is reported lost or stolen. No personally identifiable information will be stored on the phone.
  • Privacy and Transparency: Provides consumers information and control over where and how their digital identities are utilized.
  • Brand Continuity: Participating online services will be able to incorporate their own branding into the app to ensure an experience that is branded end-to-end.

“Login with your phone will one day become as ubiquitous as being able to use your credit card anywhere you shop,” said Robert Blumenthal, EnStream’s Chief Identity Officer. “But it has to be much easier to use and much more secure than SMS passcodes to be trusted by online services and consumers alike. We provide device-based security enabled with a secure PIN or biometrics, enhanced by real-time mobile network verification and fraud analytics to protect your identity.”

Payfone and EnStream will be discussing their Mobile ID solution on a panel entitled “The Future is Now – Next-Generation International Identity Projects” at the Identity North digital identity conference, which will run from June 19-June 20 in Toronto.

Washington, D.C. (May 2, 2018) – Payfone, the world’s leading digital identity authentication network, has hired W. Ross Ashley, III to be Vice President of Government Affairs & Federal Markets.

In this capacity, Mr. Ashley will lead all government affairs activities, including legislative and executive branch engagement, as well as manage external government affairs resources. In addition, Ashley will develop and lead the federal presence for Payfone risk management and identity management products and solutions.

“We’re excited to have Ross join our rapidly growing team at Payfone in this vital role,” said Payfone CEO Rodger Desai. “Ross’s deep knowledge of cybersecurity, along with experience in both the public and private sectors, will prove invaluable as Payfone continues its expansion in new markets. Ross will also lead our effort to assist federal policy makers in shaping national cybersecurity regulation, leveraging Payfone’s secure, privacy-centric approach to digital identity authentication.”

Ashley, a former Air Force intelligence officer, was nominated by President George W. Bush to serve as Assistant Administrator of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Following his unanimous Senate confirmation, Ashley managed and distributed over $10.1B in federal assistance funds for preparedness and disaster programs within the Department of Homeland Security from 2007-2009 during both the Bush and Obama administrations. In addition, Ashley was the founding Executive Director of the National Fusion Center Association, a national advocacy group for the DHS and DOJ-recognized fusion centers. In the private sector, Ashley founded The Templar Corporation to provide information-sharing solutions to public safety agencies in the United States and Canada. Ashley and his team successfully sold Templar to ChoicePoint after growing the company to supporting over 100 public safety agencies. Most recently, he led business development activities and stakeholder engagement for SAP National Security Services (SAP NS2) and provided consulting services to clients of a global advisory firm in the areas of M&As, homeland security, data analytics, risk management, and intelligence.

“Digital identity will be at the forefront of the discussion on how government provides secure and customer-friendly solutions in an increasingly online world,” said Ashley. “Payfone’s rapid growth shows the success of an approach that simultaneously delivers protection and convenience. I look forward to working with government and policy leaders to help them take advantage of our suite of digital identity solutions.”

Payfone’s contrarian approach to delivering cybersecurity that enhances the customer experience instead of hindering it is used by top financial, healthcare, retail, high-tech and insurance companies to facilitate trust for digital transactions. In November, Payfone was named the #72 fastest growing technology company in North America by Deloitte, and the company is on track to authenticate 19 billion transactions in 2018 as it continues its expansion into 35 global markets.

Canada becomes latest global market to enable Payfone’s Trust Score identity analytics technology, protecting consumers against digital identity theft and bringing trust to online transactions

NEW YORK/TORONTO (April 17, 2018) – It’s one of the most pressing challenges facing enterprises today: How can businesses be sure the consumer on the other end of a digital transaction is legitimate and that they are safeguarding consumers against digital identity theft as they transact online? Payfone, the world’s leading digital identity authentication company, and EnStream, a joint venture of Canada’s leading national mobile telecom companies, announced today their partnership to address this global challenge by offering advanced digital identity authentication that does not require consumers to sacrifice convenience for security.

CLOSING THE TRUST GAP

Payfone’s partnership with EnStream extends its best-in-class verification and authentication services, including Payfone’s real-time Trust Score identity analytics technology, to Canadian companies enhanced by EnStream services covering over 90% of Canadians. The Trust Score, which is used by Payfone’s Fortune 100 clients ranging from top banks to leading retailers and health insurance companies, analyzes digital signals from a wide array of trusted sources to provide the most complete snapshot of identity confidence on the market.

“Digital identity as we know it today serves no one but fraudsters. There’s something wrong when it’s easier for a hacker to get into an account than the legitimate user,” said Rodger Desai, Chief Executive Officer of Payfone. “Through our partnership with EnStream, we’re extending our global framework of digital identity as it should be—one that serves users with security and ease-of-use and facilitates trust between businesses and their users online—to the Canadian market.”

BENEFITS OF THE PAYFONE TRUST SCORE TO ENTERPRISES AND CONSUMERS

  • Omni-channel: Functions across mobile app, mobile web, voice (call center), PCs and tablets to authenticate account openings, logins, text and chat sessions, and inbound and outbound call center calls
  • Decentralized: Multiple, differentiated sources to inform and verify identity

  • No consumer data is stored
  • Stronger identity confidence allows enterprises to extend more services and conveniences to consumers immediately without tenuring
  • Thwarts account takeover and impersonation attacks; Impervious to social engineering

“We are excited to help extend Payfone’s world-class digital identity authentication network to Canadian companies using EnStream’s mobile subscriber identity verification services,” said Robert Blumenthal, Chief Identity Officer at EnStream. “Payfone’s Trust Score is unlike other risk-based threat detection systems in that it delivers real-time information about mobile subscribers and their devices, providing reliable and definitive information to improve user experience while mitigating risk and fraud at the same time.”

Payfone is on track to authenticate 19 billion transactions in 2018 as it continues its expansion into 35 global markets. The Payfone Trust Score is used by top financial, healthcare, retail, cryptocurrency, high-tech and insurance companies to deliver identity confidence to new user account openings, mobile and web logins, text and chat sessions, and inbound and outbound call center calls.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 27, 2018)Payfone, the world’s leading digital identity authentication network, announced today that it expects to authenticate 19 billion transactions for Fortune 100 clients in 2018. The announcement was made this morning at One World Identity’s 2018 KNOW Identity conference at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C.

Payfone’s patented technology helps companies to protect users and accelerate revenue by thwarting digital fraud attacks while also enabling faster and more effortless user experiences. The New York City-based company delivers omni-channel identity authentication for some of the world’s largest banking, insurance, healthcare, retail and technology companies.

“Data breaches, account takeover attacks, fake news, and ad bots – we need to wake up and see that the current model of identity authentication is broken.” said Rodger Desai, CEO of Payfone. “Payfone is establishing a new standard of real-time, dynamic identity authentication that replaces the hackable, static framework that all too many enterprises still rely on. The fact that we’re on our way to doing 19 billion authentications for forward-thinking Fortune 100 companies this year is evidence that a new era is coming.”

Payfone was honored by Deloitte’s Fast 500 as the #72 fastest growing technology companies in North America in November of 2017. In February, the company announced that it raised $23 million from financial and strategic investors to continue its global expansion of the Payfone digital identity authentication network.

KNOW Identity conference attendees are invited to join Payfone CEO Rodger Desai for a panel discussion this afternoon at 1:30pm entitled Beyond Authentication in Financial Services: Shifting Security from Defense to Offense. Conference-goers looking to do some work, charge their devices or hold meetings are also welcome to stop by the Payfone #PasswordsSuck Business Lounge located in the Meridian suite just a few steps from the Green and Yellow panel rooms.
